So, to the results...

What a fantastic day that was! The weather would have been described by most as lousy, but constant drizzle when walking 26 miles is refreshing. The rain never got too heavy...or did we become acclimatised and just didn't realise? I'll apologise in advance for this awful pun, but it certainly didn't put a dampener on the day, boom boom!

It was apparent from the start that 38 of us walking together was never going to be an option. What did begin to take shape was team members setting into little groups of those who walked a similar pace...except poor Amy, who had to go whatever pace Talulah the dog decided she would go, often running!!!

Lisa Alexander was the Team VX version of Usain Bolt, taking little over 7 hours to complete the gruelling 26 mile course. There were a number of excellent personal and little team achievements within our ranks:

Kim Small - started the course unwell and with blistered feet. She decided to try and make the first 14 miles and turned down numerous offers of bailing out and ended up completing the section in flip-flops, so bad were her feet. It was a herculean effort, that was obvious to anyone who saw Kim on the route.

Amy Woodhead - was another starting the route with an ailment...and a dog to ruin any pace she may have wanted to set. She managed about 20 miles, sensibly taking a few miles out on each section and crossing the finishing line with a group of us.

Barbara Dale and husband John were our oldest 26 mile entrants, and made the marathon look easy. It was a fabulous effort. Barbs wasn't even stiff the following day.

Clare Restall also deserves a mention, as she hardly prepared well...walking in plimsolls was probably not advisable and 3 bottles of dry white the night before was certainly not advisable!

Jake Pemberton was another to make the 26 miles look quite comfortable, ably partnered by girlfriend, Clare Davies. Jake's day was different in that the rest of his family joined at halfway. They all did splendidly.

As for our 12 mile participants, I'm sure that Jill Finden, Maddie New and Paul Harding would all be happy to admit that they all nearly fell at the first! The hill going out of Broughton is a brute, probably the worst on the course. When we passed them flaked out on that first hill, I was concerned for their completing the course. How chuffed were we to later find that all finished at Salisbury Cathedral as planned. They summed up the spirit and determination shown by all of the 38 participants.

Other 12 milers included what is now to be known as "The Two Ann's". I saw them leave Broughton at what I considered a furious pace. I'm told they did extremely well, but there was little chance of catching them to find out!!! Take a bow Ann Dix and Ann Banks.

As for me, well I enjoyed every step of the 26 miles, ran a couple of miles along the way and warmed down with a run at the end. Where that energy came from I will never know, but I think it may have come from the pride I got from seeing the fantastic efforts mentioned above, and walking with some extremely awesome people! Walking with Team Munro was far more sociable than challenging. Again, the efforts of Sue & John Munro and Lou & Brian Little typified the efforts seen across the larger team, with all 4 suffering with different ailments.

A few people have not been mentioned here, for which I apologise. 38 pen pictures is too many, but your efforts have not been ignored. Thank you all so much for your fantastic contributions.

BUT...we have saved the best to last...

At 6pm, into Salisbury Cathedral Close came our last mini team of 26 milers, all arm in arm. Was it in celebration? Possibly, but what was obvious is that all three were helping one another to the finish line, showing the grit and teamwork that so embodied what had gone before. The group of three really were the stars of the day. STEVE OWEN is one fit fella. However, today he struggled with knee problems and also had to adjust his pace to his companions, not easy. At the finish line, I've never seen Steve look so shattered. Next to Steve was his girlfriend CAROL NYE, who had suffered the usually fatal (at least in competitive terms!) condition of having pain in the hips. When your hips go on a course of this nature, then usually, that's the end. Propping up Carol's other side was the hero of the day. DENISE GARDINER was out to prove herself, and alot of others wrong...that she could walk 26 miles. Denise suffers from Diabetes and has had problems with medication, as well as a bad back in recent months. Add to this, the dreadful weather of the past few months has severely hampered any training she wanted to do. After 12 miles, Denise almost had to pull out, as a steep hill in King Somborne saw her close to collapse. She had to address her diabetes and stopped for some suitable food and drink. Despite all of her obstacles, Denise remained incredibly positive throughout. She told me that she'd crawl over the line at 3am if she had to. When the final three came across the finish, Denise looked the strongest of all of them. I suspect that the teamwork and focus on her friends was what made Denise so strong. The final group of three were truly inspirational.

The efforts of everyone were quite incredible and should be recognised, so if you haven't...GIVE!!!

Here we go....

Training was badly hampered by the weather, so it's right & proper that tomorrows forecast is for rain. Rain, rain and more rain. Infact, nothing but rain.

I've managed plenty of training. Last weekend I managed a 20 mile warm up...by mistake. I set off walking down the River Hamble, then turned down the Solent. At Hill Head, I checked my watch, realised I'd been walking for 4 hours and had a dinner party in 3 hours time. I realised I had to find my way back across land, as the coastal route was too long. I'd even look for a bus stop... I thought I'd found a shortcut across a farm estate, and after much walking through woods and across fields...I came back to where I had started! That being the entrance to the estate, not where I'd parked the car. After getting lost, I had to run the last few miles back to the car, which I somehow managed and just about got to Dave & Kate's for dinner. A great, if slightly unplanned, work out.

I undertook this walk on the day that I should have been at Buckingham Palace, with fellow walker, Sue Munro. However, due to certain errors...my Dad went instead. The link being....

....we're going to get a right royal soaking tomorrow. At least Sue has a Royal poncho to wear!

Passed the £1,000 with 8 days to go!

Great news, in that we've passed the £1,000 mark, 8 days before we trudge across Hampshire & Wiltshire for some inspirational people.

I think it's rather nice that the person who got us across the £1000 line was from the dim and distant North. Joan Baillie is a colleague of Lisa Alexander, one of our VXWinchester team. However, for anyone reading who doesn't know Lisa, she's shortly to get married! Understandably, Lisa has been spending the majority of her time organising (and worrying!!!) about the wedding. A 26mile yomp to Salisbury is probably a nice distraction for her. Let's hope that the 26 miles is the toughest thing Lisa has to do this year :-)

Our team doesn't just have the one member getting married soon. Kim Small will be tying the knot before too long as well. Yesterday, Kim went to see Naomi House, along with Barbs Dale and Denise Gardiner. I hope they found the visit as inspirational as Sue & I did. It's great that these 3 lasses should go, as all three have made such positive contributions to team VXWinchester. Kim has roped in volunteers and raised some goodly cash, Denise is promised great sponsorship and will tackle 26 miles with a bad back and diabetes - awesome. Barbs should get a special mention though, as she is always raising money for Naomi House. Her son has done some artwork for them too.

Barb's was also given the t-shirts and numbers etc yesterday, so next week is gonna be very busy...and with only 3 working days too....

Still £500 short of our target...

Payday...

...nuff said!

...and if some good soul sponsors us £13.62, we'll have hit the £1,000 mark. But, who will it be.....???

Friday, 25 May 2012

Doesn't time fly?

So, we're now only 2 weeks, 1 day from our assault on Hampshire & Wiltshires countryside. The weather has kindly relented and "training" is underway, though how much is subject to debate!

Yesterday, Sue & I took the company's cheque for £800 to Naomi House, the cost of entry for our 40 walkers. Sadly, those walkers have become 38, yet I remain hopeful that we will hit 40 by Sunday 10th June.

The biggest part of our team is that of Jake Pemberton and his family. For those of you who don't know Jake, he is very likely to be undertaking the walk in a variety of hi-viz vests!!!

I am aware of many of our number raising goodly amounts of cash via the good old fashioned sponsor form. However, that is to the detriment of our online account. Maybe I'm being too hopeful. The current £900+ given is tremendous, but with 30 participants, I'd like to feel we could do so much more! So come on, as we get ever nearer and the weather gets ever warmer, the challenge ahead is beginning to size up. It will not be easy, infact it will be bloody hard, but it will certainly be well worth the pain...as long as we raise a goodly amount for Naomi House...

Near Herbs Cry...?

We are rapidly moving towards the event itself now and we can now do so having found out the identity of the anonymous £50 donor...who we've been trying to identify since their kind donation was placed nearly 3 week ago. So who is this mystery person?

It is someone who has revealed themselves to me...but not like that! This person is not known as a hay fever sufferer, but has been known to Near Herbs Cry...It is someone who is known to the vast majority of team VXWinchester, we see this person daily.

Work it out, pop your answer in the comments below and make a donation... ;-)

Our footie matched the Premiership for drama...

Right good people. The football in Birmingham is now done and dusted. We can now put all of our focus onto the walk and the fund-raising that has somewhat slowed. But not until after we spread the word on our football tournament, which certainly matched the drama of the Premiership yesterday...

Over 20 teams amassed in Birmingham, with both Winchester teams qualifying from the group stage. Our "yellow" team were expected to do well, but the "purple" team were surprise qualifiers...not only surprise, but disappointed. Us "purple" team players did not want to qualify as we were all knackered and could smell the barbecue and see people eating royally, and downing pints at a rate that seemed far more preferable to playing football.

So, the quarter final draw was made and, yep, you guessed it. Winchester v Winchester. Winchester won, of course! The "yellow" team. I think it was 2-1, or it might have been 2-0. I really should pay more attention whilst playing, though it was the purple team that warmed up for the event by consuming reasonable amounts of vodka.

The purple team were admirably lead by Adam "Vodka Provider" Cullen (it seems he is inspirational) and were helped in no small measure by (ringer) Steve Parnham, though I think we were all in agreement that Andy "Linvoy" Wilson was our player of the tournament. Our keeper also played a blinder, though I do wonder how good Tony Fudio could be if he were sober???

Team yellow made the final, which ended 2-2 and went to extra time. Sadly they were to lose to a good Birmingham side in added time. However, over the tournament, they did look the best team. They certainly played as a team, rather than individuals. Take a bow Steve Owen, Stuart Robertson, Grant Alexander, Matt Banks, Stuart Dollery and guest player Ramji, from head office.

Steve O should get an extra gong for having organised the whole event. It was a cracker, but with Steve-O organising it, that was inevitable. Steve is one of our number for the marathon walk.

So it's back to focusing on the walk and must start training....but only when I recover from all the lumps and bumps I was kindly given by team Birmingham Misfits, who kicked lumps out of me...they must've been Joey Barton's inspiration yesterday!

Now to focus on trying to get the walkers to contribute themselves...
